PAST EVENTS

Sunday 26th March

Piano Day, an annual worldwide event founded by a group of likeminded people, takes place on on near the 88th day of the year because of the number of keys on the instrument being celebrated. The aim of the day is to create a platform for piano related projects in order to promote the development of musical dimensions and to continue sharing the centuries-old joy of playing piano. Piano Day welcomes all kinds of piano lovers – young and old, amateur and professional, of any musical direction – to join in this years festivities. It is intended to be the most joyful of all! http://www.pianoday.org

Frances Shelley and friends Matthew Bickerton and Lewis Barham are very excited to be part of the celebrations. All three are East Anglian musicians known for exploring the intersection of classical and improvised contemporary music. Sound artist Matthew and composer / pianist Frances as ‘PIANOFIELD’ (www.pianofield.com) are a collaboration that has been developing over the last couple of years with a particular interest in the connection between music and the natural environment; they will play some of their new work composed in 2016 as well as pieces created especially for this day. Lewis Barham is an emerging young composer who will also play some of his new compositions. Starting off in the classical arena he now explores within a more minimalist contemporary style.

Dear friends

I grew up in Butley Priory on the Suffolk coast line and this magical home is somewhere that is very close and dear to my heart. I am creating this weekend retreat as I wish to share KIND Yoga, mediation, movement and nature in this very special place with you!

I’m so excited to have the ROOTED LONDON kitchen in house, serving plant-based food of pure goodness all weekend long.

As I have so much I want to share with you I am inviting people to arrive Thursday evening to allow one more day to sink into the practice and time together. If you wish to arrive Friday evening you are also welcome.

Accommodation starts with joining our camping field for £210 including all food and retreat events, shared rooms and private rooms with en suit bathrooms are also available in the house.

Join me to unwind, restore and connect to your self and your wonderful body!

Read on for more info:

Asana practice will be twice daily including vinyasa and restorative yoga with lots of time to explore and deepen your practice. This will include pranayamabreathing techniques, relaxations and mediations that we don’t normally get time for in a normal city class. All levels are welcome to join however a regular Yoga practice is recommended.

Other things to expect on the weekend:

Walks to the woods and the water – We are a 15 minuets walk away from theriver, one and half hours walk from the shingle coast line. Woodland surround the Butley Priory site
Led mantra singing together
Tree experiencing and nature art – embrace your inner hippy!
Wild swimming for the brave hearted
Body work – working with the sensitivity of touch in small groups to release muscle tension and relax the nervous system
Open fires and star light
Music ranging from ambient electronic sound journeys to the stillnessof the wild around Butley. Live piano improvisation from composer, musician and host Frances Shelley
Movement and free dancing for those who wish to 🙂

All of what we will do on the retreat is optional, if you prefer to sit under a tree to read a book or sleep for half a day this is totally up to you. I encourage all of us to disconnect from our emails and technology to fully drop into the beauty of this place and give our selves time space to re focus and balance the mind and spirit.

“Love Nor Money don’t so much demand your attention, as dance in your face till you can’t ignore them. Which is clearly a great thing.”

FRANCES SHELLEY & MATHEW BICKERTON

To open the night composer Frances Shelley and soundscape designer Matthew Bickerton will play tracks from their forthcoming album SPIRIT. Much of the music was conceived at Butley Priory in 2015, and reflects the magical and spiritual atmosphere of this 12 Century site. Field recordings of indigenous sounds including hollow trees, pigeon wings, footfall on grass are sculpted electronically to create a palette of sounds that are woven into a visual music tapestry, overlaid with minimalist piano. The incredible stone vaulted Great Hall will become an installation in itself with film projection and lighting accompanying the music.

American poet and writer Genevieve Katherine lead a 45 minute walk around the Priory grounds and ruins, with short intervals for readings of her new works, some poems being especially written for the occasion, Geneviève is a spoken word artist who works from nature, ritual, and the simple truths of our mundane and mythic existence. She looks forward to inviting and invoking you amongst this magical landscape.
